Welcome to this platform! Glad you have asked a question.
Basically, use the same process to change your picture to Facebook, but at the last step, if it asks "
Share your update to News Feed." Just untick this to make sure that the change of your profile pic won't be shared in the feed. So, no one will be notified.
Another way,
Go to your profile and click your profile picture.
Select Update Profile Picture and upload your photo the one you want.
Before clicking Save, change the privacy to
Only Me. This will make sure that this will be posted on your timeline but due to privacy settings it will not show to anyone.
later if you want, you can go ahead and delete that post or even you keep it, no one will be notified, or no one will see that post as you have the privacy setting to show "
only me".
